Flow Visitor Centre
An interactive visitor centre raising environmental awareness.
Client: Fitzroy Basin Association
Category: Visitor Information Centre
Date: December 2018
The Fitzroy Basin Association’s Flow Visitors Centre is situated in Rockhampton. Flow is an interactive visitor information centre bringing to life the area’s natural environment in new and exciting ways. It brings insight into the environmental Fitzroy river systems and surrounding natural assets. The Fitzroy Basin Association (FBA) engaged Brandi Projects to help tell the story of this amazing river system. Brandi Projects managed and executed this Project from the research stage right through to installation. This fitout was an update to the existing Flow exhibit which we completed for FBA in 2012. Since Flow’s beginnings, there have been over 27,000 visitors who have entered the space. This includes school, community and corporate groups. The resulting refurbishment is accessible and appealing to all ages.

Project purpose
The FBA wanted to refurbish the existing Flow exhibit to incorporate a fresh and modern feel. Additionally this was an opportunity to introduce some innovative technology which was unique to this exhibit. This would ensure Flow continues to be an engaging resource for understanding the environment, as well, continuing to be a place which inspires positive environmental action.
Project details
The Fitzroy Basin is over 156,000 square kilometres in size. It’s the largest river basin flowing into our precious Great Barrier Reef. It’s the largest river system on Australia’s east coast, and the second-largest catchment in Australia behind the Murray-Darling. The basin supports agriculture as the main land use, as well as being home to 40 of Queensland’s 55 coal mines.
To date, Flow is the only permanent Natural Resource Management display in Australia. The exhibit contains several interactive displays. These detail the region’s environment, animals, industries and communities.
The public education space is a great attraction for school groups, or anyone wanting to understand river health and waterways conservation and biodiversity. Flow provides a space to learn more about the significant stakeholders in the Fitzroy Basin community.
Brandi Projects worked with our trusted science and environmental communicators, EConnect Communication. Their role was to research, develop and write the content. They also sourced the information and imagery included in the interpretive displays.
Our team consulted with multiple stakeholders from local graziers and industry sectors. We also worked with the FBA team to ensure conservation and environmental messaging was to their high expectations at all times.
